Staking TRX and other tokens: what to know first
Staking means locking tokens to help secure a network or to participate in a rewards program. The idea is simple, but the lock-up terms, reward sources and penalties differ widely, so this guide walks through them in order.
Current staking APY: 10.2%Where staking rewards come from
Rewards usually come from one of two places: newly issued tokens, which dilute holders over time, or fees paid by users of the network or application. A program that does not explain its reward source clearly is a warning sign.
Questions to answer before you stake
- Who receives the rewards, and in which token?
- How long is my stake locked, and what happens if I need to exit early?
- Is there slashing, and what triggers it?
- Who operates the validator or contract, and is that information public?
- Is the advertised rate fixed or variable?
Lock-ups, unbonding and liquidity
While tokens are locked, you may be unable to sell or move them. Some programs add an unbonding period after you request a withdrawal. During that time the token price can change, so the value you receive at exit can differ from the value at entry.
Risks to weigh
- Price risk: rewards paid in a volatile token can lose value quickly.
- Lock-up risk: you may not be able to exit when you want to.
- Smart-contract risk: code can contain bugs or be exploited.
- Operator risk: a poorly run validator can lose funds or earn less.
- Impersonation risk: fake staking sites often ask you to connect a wallet and sign approvals that drain it.
How to verify a staking program
- Find the program on the project's official website and social accounts, and cross-check the contract address.
- Read the unstaking terms in full and note the exact waiting period.
- Start with a small amount and test a withdrawal before staking more.
- Never share a seed phrase or private key to 'verify' a staking account.
Staking and bridging
If you bridge TRX or USDT to another network before staking, the transfer adds its own fees and risks. Review the bridging checklist and confirm the destination network matches the staking program.
